Australian literary journal Meanjin started as Meanjin Papers in Brisbane in 1940 before moving to Melbourne in 1945 and dropping the ‘Papers’ from its title in 1947. By Christmas 1942 they were already up to their 12th issue and a note in the back welcomes new contributors, including Robert D. Fitzgerald and Miles Franklin (already well established). The last part of the colophon is poignant with its apology that critical comment on rejected submissions can no longer be undertaken due to wartime conditions, and also the “assistance to senior students at secondary schools in Brisbane has had to cease until after the war.”.
