Octavo (22 x 16.5cm), 366pp., 173 illustrations; original green cloth covers double ruled with blocked illustration and lettering in dark green and gilt, gilt panel on spine with lettering in green, author and publisher names in gilt. with the following first edition points: title leaf is second state; p.13 is first state; p.57 is first state; p.283 is third state (the leaf is a cancel); p.155 is third state; p. 161 is first state; the portrait frontispiece is first state with imprint of the Heliotype Printing Company and the table and cloth clearly visible. Head and foot of spine have been expertly repaired and reinforced, corners gently rubbed with lower corner on top board a little tender, gilt on top board quite bright but dull on the spine, some minor insect nibbling to foot of spine and bacl board lightly rubbed with a couple of small (1cm) spots; new eps; inside mostly clean, occasional soil marks, pp.112 & 113 show a stain in the shape of a brown swipe or spray at the lower quarter of the page (9cm in length, 4cm wide at base and 0.5 cm wide at top). This stain is visible to a lesser degree in the two pages preceding and two pages after, No loss of text or image. Item #1060
