Theodore Audel was the pen name of Nehemiah Hawkins (1833-1928), who started his career with G&C Merriam and Co. in Rhode Island, established the popular magazine Steam in Chicago and then moved to New York where he wrote or commissioned the many Audel Guides popular with tradesmen and craftsmen of the early twentieth century.
