Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) was an English historian and parliamentarian known for his quality of his prose, his irony and his use of primary sources and for his criticism of organised religion. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is his best known work and was first published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788.
