The Western Suburbs Branch of Society for Growing Australian Plants was born when David Hangar, a local native plant grower, convened a meeting of interested people in the Roman Catholic Church Hall in Ward St Indooroopilly on 16th May, 1972. David Hangar became the first Chairman and N. Keating was Secretary and Treasurer. In 1979 this Branch published a book (in loose-leaf and bound forms) called Perfumed and Aromatic Australian Plants, compiled and written by Ralph Bailey. On 1st June 1982, Western Suburbs amalgamated with the nearby Oxley Branch of SGAP. For a time the Branch became known as Western Suburbs/Oxley Branch, but in 1990 it reverted to Brisbane Western Suburbs Branch. The Branch cntinues to this day and information about their activities and projects can be accessed via the Native Plants Queensland website.
