Gerald Locklin has published over one hundred volumes of poetry, fiction, and literary essays including Charles Bukowski: A Sure Bet, (Water Row Press) and Go West, Young Toad, (Water Row Press). Charles Bukowski called him “One of the great undiscovered talents of our time.” The Oxford Companion to Twentieth Century Literature in the English Language calls him “a central figure in the vitality of Los Angeles writing.” His works have been widely translated and he has given countless readings here and in England. He is a Professor Emeritus at California State University, Long Beach. [From Locklin's own website, accessed 17/09/2020).

Locklin and Jones appear to have had an epistolary relationship conducted through the exchange of their poetry. Jones was renowned for writing in his books in colourful capitalised letters. As with most of the inscribed books in his collection, this copy has escaped his [often lurid] marginalia; the only hint of his ownership in Locklin's use of the familar, "Billy"
