Popular cookery writer Elizabeth David (1913-1992) strongly influenced the the revitalisation of home cooking in Britain by writing about European cuisines. John Minton was a painter that built a reputation as an illustrator of books. His work is held by the Tate and in many public and private collections. Sophie MacCarthy's iconic watercolours enliven both the cover and the pages of the book.
A Book of Mediterranean Food was first published by John Lehmann in 1950. The text of this edition follows that of the second revised edition published by Macdonald in 1958, with minor emendations.
