First published in 1899, Little Black Sambo was initially considered the first positive black hero in children's literature. The story later became subject to charges of racsim in the mid twentieth century because the names of the characters were racial slurs for dark-skinned people and the illustrations were considered to be in the 'pickanniny' style. It has since undergone numerous revisions and new illustrations. This 1975 Chatto and Windus edition is a reprint of their 1965 edition, which does not appear to depart far from the original.
