E.A. (Gary) McCombe was one of thirty-four Tasmanians who joined the Norwegian whaler N.T. Nielsen Alonso in October 1929 to commence whaling in the Ross Sea. McCombe went on to write 'Whales and Whalers', published in 1940 to enthusiastic local reviews by New Century Press.
'The Knockabout', self published nearly twenty years later, seems to have gone unnoticed and unremarked. In the ALS addressed to Ivy Harrison, McComb seems fairly cognizant of the book's shortcomings, concluding, "Finally, apart from the above defects, this book has a not a nobility of purpose or even of mere achievement but it has frankness which could be a basis for something more worthwhile in my next reincarnation. McCombe."
A postscript and a post-postscript suggest Miss Harrison may have had some claim on the author's affections. He writes "P.S. As 'The Knockabout' is being featured in the local book shop, your friends (including the Dunstans) can buy a copy there for three dollars instead of borrowing this copy from you which, after all, is a personal gesture from - Gary"; and, "P.P.S. Just drop me a line later on telling me what you think of the book bearing in mind that it is not what the average woman cares to read about. Gary"
