Octavo (225 x 145 mm.), 2 v.,  vi, 568;  496 pp., engraved portrait frontis., black calf, 5 false raised bands with red and brown labels in 2nd and 4th compartments with gold blocked author and title, other compartments decoratively tooled in gold, decorative gold border on boards, marbled endpapers, all edges red. Some foxing, mostly on endpapers, spines and edges of bindings rubbed, corners lightly worn, vol.1 spine missing author label and worn at head, front inner hinge broken, outer hinge cracked at top and bottom, v.2 front hinge starting, text blocks fine and solid. Rev. John Macgowan (1726-1780) was a Baptist Minister and a controversial writer of several allegorical publications. His major work 'Infernal Conferences, or Dialogues of Devils, by the Listener' (first published 1772) along with 'Death, a Vision', 'Priestcraft Defended', 'A Rod for the Sluggard', 'A Caution to Drunkards' and 11 other works are included in this collection.
