Complete in two volumes, both 4mo (21.7 x 13.5cm), Vol 1: pp. (xxii), 555 [1, blank] + fold out biographical chart; Vol 2: pp. 577, [1] ; brown calf spine and corners, gilt bands and decoration to spine with contrasting brown labels, blind detailing to cover, marbled boards, speckled edges and grey endpapers.

Volume One: head and tail rubbed; spine lightly crackling with some small chips, labels lifting slightly in places; sticker to spine; joints and edges a little worn; hinges tender at endpapers; corners gently bruised and abraded with a 25 x 7mm patch of vertical wear and a 10mm diagonal chip to the top front corner, 15 x 12mm patch of wear and 5 x 2 mm insect hole to top rear corner; 5mm vertical tear to calf near base of spine on rear board; marbled boards rubbed with a 20 x 25mm patch of wear to rear board; Fletcher Memorial Library book plate tipped in inside front cover; 35 x 3mm vertical strip of toning to first and last free endpapers; previous seller’s pencil price on first blank endpaper; rippling, light creasing and mild toning throughout, toning heavier on the two pages either side of foldout chart; moderate spotting to endpapers and title page, heavy foxing to fold out chart, other pages reasonably clean with occasional light spotting; indentations to bottom of book either side of chart, apparently made so that book will close flat; pencil ‘11055’ on title page and ‘12’ to the bottom of page ix; dog ear to bottom of page 153; 15mm closed tears without loss to pages 213-216.

Volume Two: similar condition to Volume One, head and tail rubbed; spine lightly crackling with some small chips and a few patches of wear to the base; sticker to spine; joints and edges worn; hinges tender at endpapers; corners bruised and worn with a small insect hole to the bottom front corner; marbled boards rubbed and scuffed with a 45 x 3-10mm diagonal tear to front board; light nibbling to edges; Fletcher Memorial Library book plate tipped in inside front cover, nibbled towards bottom; 35 x 3mm vertical strip of toning to first and last free endpapers; rippling, light creasing and mild toning throughout; moderate spotting to endpapers, first six pages and pages 119-130, 253-260, other pages reasonably clean with occasional light spotting; stains to bottom half of first six pages; pencil ‘8’ to the bottom of page 9; 5 x 5mm black mark to the bottom of page 10. 1819 reprint of Enfield’s 1791 translation of Brucker’s work originally published between 1742-1744. William Enfield (1741-1797) was a British Unitarian minister. In this work he has translated Johnann Jakob Brucker’s (1696-1770) five volume Historia Critica Philosophiae (Critical History of Philosophy).
