Volume One: Head bruised and gently worn, tail rubbed; bands and joints abraded; labels crackling with age; gilt mostly bright, bottom edge scuffed and dull, top and fore edge are lightly used; corners gently bruised and worn; edges of text block mostly clean with light scratches to the bottom; boards a touch scratched with mild edgewear; black ribbon book mark has broken off; front gutter a little tender; shallow rippling throughout; light toning, slightly heavier at edges; Fletcher Memorial Library bookplate tipped in inside cover causing pages to stick together resulting in five small abrasions (largest 15 x 11mm) to ffep and paper stuck to paste-down; gilt edges have caused browning to edges of endpapers; previous seller’s pencil notes on first blank page; mild foxing to first and last few pages, otherwise mostly clean with very occasional spotting; minor nibbling to edges of first and last few pages with a small patch in the top corner of the rear endpaper.

Volume Two: condition very similar to Volume One, head bruised and gently worn, tail rubbed; bands and joints abraded; labels crackling with age; gilt mostly bright, bottom edge a little dull; corners gently bruised and worn; edges of text block mostly clean, 15 x 7mm patch of nibbling to top and a few light scratches to bottom; boards a touch scratched with mild edgewear, 32 x 2mm and 20 x 5mm diagonal tears to calf at top corner of front board; front gutter a little tender; shallow rippling throughout; light toning, slightly heavier at edges; Fletcher Memorial Library bookplate tipped in inside cover; gilt edges have caused browning to edges of endpapers; mild foxing to first and last few pages, otherwise mostly clean with very occasional spotting; pencil marks to page 1 and blank facing page; black ribbon bookmark has caused toning to pages 74 & 75. William Archer Butler (c. 1814-1848) was Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Dublin. Lectures on the History of Ancient Philosophy is one of the few British works on the history of philosophy.
