Private eye Frank Monte claimed that he had been working for Versace and that his client had been murdered by the Mafia. The Versace family were outraged and took him to court, eventually bankrupting him.
As recorded in Cain, Monte's book was, "the truly awful autobiography by Aussie private eye Frank Monte and about life with Gianni Versace. Publisher Pan Macmillan asked all reviewers to chuck their copies in the bin." [Cain 117]. Clearly not all reviewers followed this directive.
