Narrative of the expedition of the Australian Squadron to New Guinea was first published in 1885 to commemorate the raising of the British Flag in Port Moresby in 1884 and hence the establishment of a British Protectorate over the southern shores of what is now the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. This facsimile edition has been produced to commemorate the official opening on August 7, 1984, of Papua New Guinea's Parliament House by Prince Charles The Prince of Wales, and to also mark the centenary year since the Proclamation of British New Guinea.
