Towards Evening; Edited by F.C. Francis
Redcliffe: F.C. Francis, 1974. First Edition. Stapled between plain paper wraps : 24pp. : out of series copy (only ten were printed and bound) : INSCRIBED "For Kerry" by editor Frank C. Francis : with typed note signed "Love Dad" from Frank C. Francis to his son Kerry. Fine. Item #15714
There are twelve poems followed by some prose notes by Francis who gives Devaney the last word by quoting a letter.
The typed note from Frank C. Francis to his son reveals that he was under strict obligations from "Jim D." not to print more than the ten copies that were bound and distributed to Jim's family and "certain Literary Libraries". Nevertheless, Francis had this extra copy printed in case anything went wrong with one of the bindings and now felt "in honour bound to keep this book for lending to my own family and certain special friends whom I can rely upon to return it to me."
Francis was particularly sensitive to the fact that Devaney did not want any publicity for this "last record of his poetic output" and had "agreed in principle to this veto". He suggests to Kerry that if he is writing to Jim about any of the poems, that he say Francis had lent his copy of the book, "to read and return".
Provenance: From the family of Frank C. Francis.
