William Coote (1822-1898) trained as an architect and engineer in England and was in Van Diemen's Land by 1852 and Queensland by 1860. His work in Australia involved railway surveying, town planning, political agitating and journalism. He had planned for his History of Queensland to be complete in two volumes but the second was never published and is rumoured to have been destroyed by fire.
