John Ramsay of Ochtertyre (1736–1814) was a Scottish writer and antiquarian. A renowned letter-writer even in his own lifetime, most of his extensive correspondence has since been lost. Although he trained at his late father's law firm until he was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates, he never practised, preferring to retire to his estate where he observed life and read and wrote on 18th century Scotland. Robert Burns visited him, as did Walter Scott, the latter basing the character Jonathan Oldbuck in "The Antiquary" partly on Ramsay.
