Praeterita; Outlines of scenes and thoughts perhaps worthy of memory in my past life

Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent: George Allen, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889. Three quarter leather. One large Quarto : three (four) volumes (28 chapters) bound as one, each with a steel engraving : Volume one (1885 & 1886) in 12 chapters with a steel engraving of Ruskin's two aunts : pp. (v) vi-vii (viii) 432 (2 , blank) : Volume two (1886 & 1887) in 12 chapters with a steel engraving of The Old Dover' Packet Jib : pp. (viii) 442 (2, blank) : Volume three (1888 & 1889) in four chapters with a steel engraving of The Castle of Annecy : pp. (viii) 182 (4, blank) : rebound in three quarter roan leather over brick red boards : gilt ruled and lettered in gilt on spine : new endpapers.

A curious collation with an extra title page for Volume two chapter ten pasted onto the f.f.e.p. The title page for Volume two is misprinted "Volume I" but dated 1886. Publisher's note regarding the steel engraving The Castle of Annecy is laid in at the start of Volume three. Some very toned and brittle pages throughout while others are very bright and supple; open tears to the lower corner of pp 1-13 in Volume one; pp. 9-16 with closed tears to fore-edge ; the half title of volume two has a long diagonal tear and is quite brittle. Good. Item #1790
