George Keate (1729-1797) was an English author and poet who travelled extensively, was friends with Voltaire and was known for his enjoyment in talking about his own work. His account of the Pelew Islands was based on the experiences of Henry Wilson (1740–1810), an English naval captain of the British East India Company. Wilson was in command of the British East India Company packet ship Antelope, when it shipwrecked off Ulong Island, near Koror Island in Palau in 1783, and the East Indiaman Warley at the Battle of Pulo Aura. Keate's rendering of the tale was extremely popular in it's day and saw translations into German and French.
