Robert Duncan was an important part of both the Black Mountain school of poetry, led by Charles Olson, and the San Francisco Renaissance, whose other members included poets Jack Spicer and Robin Blaser. (Poetry Foundation online). Medea at Kolchis came into being in 1956 at Black Mountain College when Wes Huss asked Duncan to do a play. Wesley Huss (1918-2017) was a key figure in the latter years of Black Mountain College, the famed avant-garde institution outside Asheville, North Carolina. As theatre instructor, Huss broke ground with early U.S. productions of work by Samuel Beckett, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Jean Anouilh.
