Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Thomas Henry Hutton was a British Military Commander who pioneered tee use of mounted infantry in the British Army. He was also the first General Officer Commanding the Australian Army from 1901-1904, having previously commanded the military forces in New South Wales. After he was recalled in 1896 he was given command of the Canadian Militia and was based in Ottawa where he received this copy of the History of the French Canadian Military from Lt . Col. Aubry, who also wrote the preface.
