James Talboys Wheeler was "one of the first historians of British India to rely primarily on documentary sources. Although his perspectives were unequivocally imperialist, his work continues to be consulted for its empirical strengths." [ODNB online]. Edward Balfour is possibly the Scottish surgeon Edward Green Balfour, second son of Captain George Balfour of the East India Company. The undated but signed handwritten note points out two errors in the book (pp.150-2) and expresses wishes for "a very ready sale."
