Adelaide-born Hales (1860-1936) became a journalist working in several outback locations and later became a war correspondent during several overseas conflicts. Miller/Macartney, p213 explains the popularity of his writings developed "out of his humorously tinged Australianism and the vernacular of his characters." McGlusky, an Australian of Scotch descent, is one of his major characters.
